Nirav Modi had fled in January 2018

Nirav Modi had fled to London in January 2018 after embezzling money from the Punjab National Bank. He is accused of bribing bank officials for letters of undertakings and thus defrauding the bank. He was also arrested in London on 19 March 2019 and has been in jail ever since. He is currently being held at Wandsworth Prison in south-west London.

The new extradition law will not apply to Modi

Westminster Court Judge Sam Goozy said in his ruling that after all the hearings, it appears that Nirav Modi needs to answer questions before an Indian court. In such cases, the new UK law on extradition does not apply.

Independent inquiry from CBI, ED

The case is being investigated separately by the CBI and the ED. When Nirav Modi arrives in India, the two agencies will conduct separate inquiries. The CBI will investigate how such a big scam took place, while the ED will investigate how this money was squandered. (Big blow to Nirav Modi from UK High Court, will he return to India soon)
