New Delhi: Former cricketer Yashpal Sharma, who was instrumental in winning the 1983 World Cup, a historic moment for Indian cricket, has passed away. Sharma died of a heart attack on Tuesday (July 13) morning. He was 66 years old. Sharma, who has played 37 Tests and 42 ODIs for India, had scored 1606 runs in Tests with the help of 2 centuries. In ODI cricket, he has 89 runs to his name. But some of the matches he played in the 1983 World Cup are still fresh in everyone’s mind and it was his superb batting that helped India reach the final of the World Cup. Yashpal Sharma made his international debut in 1978 against Pakistan in an ODI at Sialkot. He then played his first Test against England at Lord’s. Sharma last played an ODI against England in 1985 at Chandigarh. The last Test match was against the West Indies in Delhi in 1983.
1983 World Cup hero
Yashpal Sharma, who played Ranji Trophy for Punjab, made his ODI debut for the Indian cricket team in 1978. He then made his Test debut in 1979. In a career spanning more than 6 years, Yashpal scored 1606 runs in 37 Tests, including two centuries. He scored 883 runs in 42 ODIs. But Yashpal’s performance in the 1983 World Cup was commendable. He had scored 89 runs in his first match against the West Indies. After that, Yashpal, who also scored a crucial 40 against Australia, won the match by scoring 61 against England in the semi-finals.
Relationship with cricket continues even after retirement
Yashpal Sharma, one of India’s leading middle order batsmen, has been associated with cricket all his life. Even after his retirement from cricket, he was still associated with cricket in one way or another. He was also the national selector of Team India.
