The PCV vaccine has been included in the universal vaccination campaign to protect children from pneumococcal disease. PCV vaccination was introduced in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area.
Navi Mumbai: Streptococcus pneumoniae virus is the leading cause of pneumococcal disease in children under five years of age. That is why the PCV vaccine has been included in the universal vaccination campaign to protect children from pneumococcal diseases. As per the government order, PCV vaccination was started from today (July 13) in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area. Ansh Gajanan Madekar of Shivajinagar MIDC at Minatai Thackeray Hospital Nerul of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation became the first beneficiary of 6 week old baby PCV vaccine.
As per the instructions of Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar, universal vaccination program is started regularly. A total of 118 permanent vaccination sessions are being conducted every month at Navi Mumbai Municipal Hospitals, Civil Primary Health Centers. In addition 324 external contact sessions and 28 mobile sessions are conducted. Thus, through a total of 470 immunization sessions per month, this universal immunization program is implemented to protect children between the ages of 0 to 6 from various diseases. The program will take place in 7 phases and will prevent 12 diseases. This now includes the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV).
Who will get the dose of PCV vaccine?
The first dose of PCV vaccine will be given to a baby 6 weeks and a half old after birth. At 14 weeks, a three-and-a-half-month-old baby will be given a second dose, while a 9-month-old baby will be given a booster dose. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has received 1500 doses of PCV vaccine. This PCV vaccine will be given free of cost.
External contact sessions are being conducted at various places like Anganwadi, Society Offices, Private Medical Professionals, Dispensaries, Private Hospitals as well as Navi Mumbai Municipal Hospitals. Mobile sessions are being organized at places like stone quarries, settlements under flyovers, settlements near stations, brick kilns, slum areas in MIDC area, construction sites. Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar has instructed the health department that no child should be deprived of universal vaccination which protects against various diseases.
Training to Asha Swayamsevak and Anganwadi Sevika
Medical officers of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation as well as ANM have completed the training on PCV vaccination. Asha volunteers and Anganwadi workers have also been trained. Also, a workshop has been organized for private medical practitioners (General Practitioners) and they have been given information about PCV vaccination.
Who is most at risk for pneumococcal disease?
The risk of pneumococcal disease is highest in children up to one year of age. The disease is also found in children up to 2 years of age. The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine has been included in the universal immunization program to prevent the risk of this disease in young children. Parents of babies who have completed 6 weeks in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area should protect their baby by giving free dose of PCV vaccine in any hospital, civic health center of the corporation, an appeal is being made on behalf of Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar.
