“Stan Swamy’s bail application was repeatedly rejected despite application”
“Father Stan Swamy was kept in the Taloja jail in Mumbai. There his health deteriorated. He was also diagnosed with covid infection. He consistently applied for bail on the background of illness. However, bail was denied. He died while the Mumbai High Court was hearing a petition against his denial of bail, ”the Human Rights Commission said.
“Worrying use of UAPA against human rights activists”
The commission said, “The UN High Commissioner and independent experts have raised the issue of the release of Father Stan and 15 other human rights activists who have been in jail for the past three years in the Bhima Koregaon case. Concerns have also been raised about the misuse of the Anti-Illegal Acts Act (UAPA) against human rights activists. ”
“No one should be arrested for violating fundamental rights”
“Against the backdrop of the corona outbreak, a country like India has only expressed dissent and should release ‘undertrial’ prisoners who do not have sufficient concrete evidence. No one should be arrested for exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. ” The Commission also made such an appeal to the Government of India.
