Mumbai: The central government had on June 16 made the hallmarking rule mandatory for gold jewelery across the country. Accordingly, it is now mandatory to have a hallmark when selling gold. It is currently being implemented in phases. Initially, hallmarking on gold jewelery will be mandatory in most of the first three states of Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has informed about this. Against this backdrop, 256 districts will be covered in the first phase. Previously hallmarking on gold jewelry was optional. However, as per the notification issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the government has identified 228 states and 266 districts in the Union Territory for the implementation of the first phase of gold hallmarking.

19 districts in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh

Hallmarking will be mandatory in a maximum of 24 districts in Tamil Nadu in the list of states provided by the Consumer Ministry. After that, hallmarking rule will be implemented in 23 districts of Gujarat and 22 districts of Maharashtra. About 19 districts in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh have been earmarked for the first phase of hallmarking.

It also includes seven districts each in Delhi and Telangana, 12 districts in Andhra Pradesh and Punjab, 13 districts in Kerala, 14 districts in Karnataka and 15 districts in Haryana. In addition, goldsmiths in 256 districts of the country will be allowed to sell jewelery with hallmarking of 14, 18 and 22 carat gold.

Customers will have to wait till August for hallmarking jewelery.

The central government had from June 16 introduced the rule that only hallmarked gold jewelery would be sold across the country. However, after the implementation of this rule, consumers are still waiting for jewelery with Gold Hallmarking. All goldsmiths in large districts of the state will have to wait for at least another month and a half for the availability of hallmark jewelery.

The picture is that the central government has implemented this decision in a hurry, similar to the exchange of notes and GST. Because, even after 12 days of reversal of the rules, there are still many changes left in the registration system. Therefore, the implementation of Gold Hallmarking has been postponed till August.
