New Delhi: Revathi Veeramani, who was orphaned when she was just 5 years old, was taken care of by her grandmother who worked as a laborer. Initially, she did not even have shoes or sandals on her feet while training and overcoming such a difficult situation, Revati will now be competing for India in the world’s biggest competition, the Olympics. Revati, 23, of Sakimangalam village in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district, will represent India at the Tokyo Olympics 2021 starting July 23. Revati is part of India’s four-time 400m mixed relay team. Talking to PTI about the difficult situation that Revathi has faced, she said, “I was told that my father died due to some stomach ailment and my mother also died of fever six months later. My grandmother Arammal then took care of me and my sister. She had to work on a brick kiln for that. She taught us without listening to anyone, even when her relatives told her not to send us to school. ‘ Revati, who is now going to play in the Olympics, also works as a TTE in Indian Railways. Her younger sister is an officer in the Chennai police.

“My grandmother worked hard to take care of us,” Revathi said of her memories of practicing in college. Also my Guruji Kannan Sir helped me to make my career in sports. I had participated in college competitions without slippers. I also did not have shoes at the 2016 Coimbatore National Junior Championships. Then Kannan Saran helped me and provided me with the right facilities so that I could be more successful in my sport.
