The US on Friday condemned China’s proposed new veto powers on Hong Kong’s number of lawmakers as a “direct assault” on the town’s autonomy and demanded that Beijing reverse course.
The proposed measures “are a direct assault on Hong Kong’s autonomy, Hong Kong’s freedom and the democratic processes,” State Division spokesman Ned Value advised reporters.
He mentioned that the transfer violated Hong Kong’s Primary Legislation that took impact in 1997 when Britain handed over the monetary hub to China.
“If applied, these measures would drastically undermine Hong Kong democratic establishments and so they run immediately counter to the Primary Legislation’s clear acknowledgment that Hong Kong elections ought to progress in direction of common suffrage,” Value mentioned.
